2017 Annual Conference - Registration opened 6/1/17
We would like to invite you to attend the 2017 Annual Conference organized by the Executive Committee of the Rural Planning Caucus of Virginia, which will be held from October 18 - 20, 2017 at the historic Berry Hill Resort & Conference Center in South Boston, Virginia.
The conference begins with a walking tour of the Town of Halifax with tour stops highlighting small town revitalization on Wednesday afternoon followed by dinner at Berry Hill. Thursday begins with a keynote address by John McCarthy, about how rural localities can discover, capitalize and showcase the local resources they already have locally to sustain and grow their rural economies. Other speakers will highlight examples of rural assets and how they have been highlighted in their own communities such as artisan trails, parks and greenways and historic resources. Next we will have a session about proffers and conditional zoning led by a local government attorney. After lunch we'll have a lightning round focusing on several timely topics of interest for local planners.
A session on how local government can create planning teams to work with other local authorities like school boards to plan for construction of new facilities will conclude Thursday's session prior to the short annual business meeting.
Thursday afternoon before dinner, we will have a hike on the Tobacco Heritage Trail. Following dinner remember to join us for some great music by a local live band and our ever popular annual awards ceremony!
The conference concludes with sessions on planning ethics, legislation and law Friday morning. Unless noted, all sessions will have AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) credits.
Virginia RPC is an organization that is dedicated to identifying, publicizing and satisfying the unique planning needs of small towns and rural areas. Every year the RPC Executive Committee works hard to organize a conference where rural planning professionals from around Virginia and surrounding states can discuss important rural planning topics and network to better promote and sustain resilient rural communities.
2017 marks 39 continuous years that RPC has been hosting an annual conference for rural planning professionals. We also support the next generation of rural planners by offering an annual $1,000 scholarship to a planning student to continue their studies. Since 1999, RPC has awarded over $12,000 to college students at Virginia universities with planning programs.
Please visit our Past Conferences page to see what kind of conference topics and activities we have covered in prior years.
The 2017 conference is expected to provide full conference participants with a total of up to 11 CM credits - including ethics and legal credits. If your two-year AICP reporting period is almost over, you'll appreciate these CM credits!
